Magna built a vendor-agnostic system supporting fast news production at Telkom Indonesia, integrating an existing MAM to include multi-channel playout, story creation and archiving.
Telkom Indonesia, state-owned telecommunications company and broadcaster, recently built and launched a new Indonesian English-language news and lifestyle television channel called SEA Today (Southeast Asia Today), designed to serve Southeast Asian and international audiences. The project was undertaken with integrator Magna Systems in Jakarta.
Senior Pre Sales Engineer at Magna, Maulana Alamsyah, said, “Because Telkom Indonesia were already sending modern broadcast quality channels to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and other countries, they wanted the new SEA Today to meet and adhere to the same standards. They had a number of other technological requirements as well. SEA Today is now a 24-hour ASEAN English language international state media and public broadcasting news television channel.
Fast Vendor-Agnostic News Workflow
Magna specified and built a vendor-agnostic system supporting a fast news workflow at Telkom Indonesia that integrates with the company’s existing Vizrt MAM systems, Viz One. Viz One’s dedicated Ingest and Importer applications now manage video processing for the workflow as well, from ingest through editing, sending to studio playout and archiving. Their new newsroom computer system [NRCS] is Octopus 12, working with Chyron broadcast graphics software.
The Octopus 12 newsroom system can be deployed with either a story-based focus or a rundown focus. To increase newsroom collaboration, it has a new web client allowing access through a browser to commonly used Octopus 12 features, on other devices. It includes rundown management and supports a level of automation.
Automation
Viz One media asset management handles ingest, transcoding, editing, logging, metadata and reporting. More specifically, it can be used to import live feeds and files, manually and automatically define content with descriptive metadata for search and discovery, and edit and produce content, either directly in a browser or using a conventional NLE like Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer. Finally, it will automatically distribute and archive content to storage.
Through Vizrt’s APIs, Viz One integrates with 3rd party systems and can be used to automate common tasks, including triggering workflows relevant to the media being ingested. It also supports multiple SD and HD video file formats including MXF, DV, AVC, ProRes, DNx, IMX and H.264. It also ingests live streams and makes them available to editors and operators in near real time. Also integrated with these tools is an integrated playout system and channel origination system from Imagine Communications.
Simpler Workflow Integration
In fact, all of these vendors are technology partners of Octopus, which has made workflow integration simpler for SEA Today, and all workflow elements communicate via the MOS protocol and API. Like Vizrt, Octopus puts considerable effort into connection with third party systems. Because Octopus NRCS now integrates with over 70 different vendors and has about 30 technology partners, users can combine numerous different system components together to function as a single unit.
Magna has been able to set up full workflow capabilities for SEA Today’s journalists including ingest and editing of raw clips direct from contributors’ cameras, story creation and graphics, final checking by script editors and final approval by producers to send to playout.
