Adobe’s new app accesses Photoshop's image editing and design functions such as layering and masking, and AI-based tools like Generative Fill, on mobile with free and paid-for features.

Adobe mobile4

Adobe Photoshop is now available as a mobile app, and through expanded web access. Photoshop on iPhone is released now, with a version on Android to follow later in 2025. The app makes Photoshop's image editing and design capabilities, including tools such as layering and masking, and Generative Fill that runs on Adobe’s AI engine Firefly, available on mobile devices, with free and paid-for features.

Photoshop's new mobile app is free of charge and makes it possible for current users to make edits and access their work when away from an office, develop ideas or work on personal projects while using a phone. It also has a simpler interface than the desktop version, which is expected to extend the use of Photoshop to a wider market.

The paid-for Photoshop Mobile and Web plan adds extra features on mobile and iPad, along with access to Photoshop on the web. It delivers image editing and design functionality to mobile and web creators, including tools for precise selections, certain types of adjustments, professional-level colour corrections, expanded access to Firefly-powered generative AI tools, full format support for opening and editing any Photoshop document – and others.

Integrated Experiences

The mobile and web experiences are closely integrated so that users can work on the same project across devices. The Photoshop web interface now has features for transitioning between web and mobile. It is also directly integrated with the Adobe Stock library of free assets, and compatible across browsers including Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

This Adobe development combines features with a high level of precision and control, in a single mobile app – although Photoshop on mobile is not intended to replace Photoshop on the desktop. As usual, artists can customise all of their design elements to pixel level, explore ideas and make edits with Photoshop's core layering, masking and blending tools.

For existing Photoshop desktop subscribers – note that Photoshop on iPhone and Photoshop on the web are included with your subscription.

Mobile App – Purpose-built for Phones

The new mobile app is purpose-built for phones. Among experienced desktop users, Adobe envisages it being used for fashion, music, games or traditional design applications such as vision and mood boards. Newer users are anticipated to be working on album and podcast cover art, fashion lookbooks, social and elsewhere.

The new software is compatible with Photoshop apps in environments ranging from desktop, web and iPad, which means that long time Photoshop creators can now use the mobile app to work out new ideas, make lightweight edits and start personal projects from wherever they are.

As mentioned, capabilities available to all mobile users are the core Photoshop tools and features for combining, compositing and blending images, including selections, layers and masks. The Tap Select tool can be used to remove, re-colour or replace parts of an image, and fast removal tools like the Spot Healing Brush are included.

Generative AI tools based on Adobe Firefly include Generative Fill and Generative Expand, useful for adding new elements to fill out designs and for editing photos quickly

The app’s direct integration with other Adobe software including Express, Fresco and Lightroom helps navigate across workflows, and free access to Adobe Stock assets gives further options for adding and replacing elements.

Photoshop Mobile and Web Plan

Paying for the Photoshop Mobile and Web plan gives users more precision by expanding their access and allowing them to transition from Photoshop mobile to Photoshop on the web. This adds more editing features on mobile, when better control is needed.

The Plan also adds access to further generative tools including Generate Similar and Reference Image in Photoshop web, and gives access to more than 20,000 fonts. Users can also import other fonts for specific typography requirements.

Other familiar tools become available as well, including Object Select for making precise selections of people and objects, Magic Wand to isolate objects and make targeted adjustments, the Remove Tool, Clone Stamp and Content-Aware Fill.

Specialised blend modes help users control transparency, apply colour effects and add distinctive styles. The Lighten and Darken tools adjust areas of an image without affecting hue or saturation.
