Canon’s new full-frame handheld EOS R6 V mirrorless camera and the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ power zoom lens create a portable package ready to capture cinematic-quality video and still photography. Canon is also making a limited-edition kit available that includes a RØDE Wireless GO Gen 3 microphone system with the purchase of the EOS R6 V – either the body alone or together with the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ lens.
The EOS R6 V’s full-frame performance comes in a more straightforward format than traditional cinema gear. The camera records 7K RAW footage up to 60p, oversampled 4K up to 60p, 2K up to 180p and high frame rates up to 4K 120p for slow-motion. Built with a compact, lightweight body (688g), an ergonomic grip, 12 custom buttons and the standard EOS interface, its fast, accessible design suits solo creators. The 5-axis in-body image stabilisation achieves up to 7.5 stops of shake reduction, which helps maintain steady video and sharp stills even when used handheld.
Open Gate recording gives users the most flexibility. In post-production an editor can take a single clip and reframe horizontal or vertical shots, making it easier to break out into workflows for diverse viewing platforms.
Autofocus with Subject Detection
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system includes intelligent Subject Detection, with options for people, animals and vehicles, and Eye Detection. Register People Priority is a setting that allows the user to register up to ten people to focus on, and Eye Detection focuses on a person’s eyes for clarity. These developments help solo camera operators handle fast-paced scenarios, and achieve sharp results without manual intervention as subjects move unpredictably.
The EOS R6 V has a dedicated zoom lever for precise control of the optical zoom on the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ and other compatible Canon lenses, so shots can be reframed almost instantly. A front record button and a vertical tripod socket with a vertical interface are convenient for specific mobile and social content.
The Vari-angle LCD monitor flips out from the camera body, making it easier on the operator to shoot from creative angles. When the LCD monitor is swung out, it can be rotated up, down or forward, and when shooting video with the LCD monitor facing the subject, it will display a mirror image on the screen.
As well as short-form video, the EOS R6 V is able to support long-form recording due to the active cooling and dual-card recording built into the body. These features make the camera a good choice for podcasts, product reviews, personal stories and so on. There are also four channels of audio that can be recorded while precisely controlling each input independently.
Stills Photography
For stills photographers, this camera captures high-resolution 32.5MP stills silently at speeds of up to 40 fps and will begin recording images before the shutter release is fully pressed. A dedicated Photo/Movie Mode switch shifts the camera between video and stills capture without navigating menus.
Via the camera’s USB-C interface, webcam applications can be set up at 4K 60p, as well as battery charging and file transfer. A full-size HDMI port supports external monitoring, and the multi-function shoe powers compatible accessories directly.
RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ Power Zoom Lens
Canon’s RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ is the first full-frame lens in the RF L-series with an internal power zoom.
The zoom ring operates as both a controlled, steady servo zoom while recording video, and a manual process for precise adjustments when capturing stills or filming. Covering a wide 20-50mm focal range at a constant f/4 maximum aperture, the lens is versatile, working well from interior settings to wide landscape views, without changing lenses.
The RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ features UD lens elements, Air Sphere Coating (ASC), and optically suppressed focus breathing to maintain a stable frame during zooming. Weighing 420g, it delivers up to 6-stops of optical image stabilisation, ensuring shake-free handheld shooting. Its Nano USM autofocus provides swift, silent, and accurate focusing, down to 0.24 metres.
