Canon has begun development of the EOS R1 full frame mirrorless camera, with a new image processing system to improve Auto Focus, and more accurate, robust subject tracking.

Canon has started development of a full frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R1, as the primary model for the EOS R SYSTEM. The camera is equipped with an RF mount and planned for official release later in 2024.

The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera made for professional use in fields ranging from sports and news reporting to video production. As well as durability and reliability, Canon says this camera will deliver the performance needed for both still images and video.

This camera employs a new image processor, the DIGIC Accelerator, as well as Canon’s existing processor DIGIC X. The resulting new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds and is expected to significantly improve the Auto Focus (AF) and other functions.

By combining the new image processing system with deep learning to an advanced degree, Canon has aimed to achieve high-speed, highly accurate subject recognition. For example, subject tracking has been made accurate and robust enough so that at team sporting events where multiple players cross paths, the target subject can be continuously tracked even if another player passes directly in front.

In addition, the AF Action Priority function recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines which player is performing a certain known action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.

Canon plans to implement an image noise reduction function that was originally developed as part of the software for PCs, further developing and using it as a camera function to improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.

Canon is working on field tests for this camera, and will support the capture of definitive, impactful moments at international sporting events to be held in the future. Going forward, Canon will continue to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup of cameras and RF lenses, intending to meet the demands of a wide range of users and contribute to the development of photography and video culture.
