The EOS R8's sensor captures full width video up to 4K 60p. The sensor’s fast read out speed reduces rolling shutter, supporting up to 40fps continuous shooting and low noise, high ISO up to 102,400 for stills and 25,600 for video, all of which make the EOS R8 a good choice for shooting moving subjects in dimly lit environments. The full frame sensor, with its shallow depth of field that creates a soft background, combined with the bolder colours captured within the wide dynamic range, combine to help the image subject stand out more clearly.
Weighing about 461g including memory card and battery, the EOS R8 measures 132.5 x 86.1 x 70mm. It has a high resolution 2.36m dot EVF working at up to 120fps, and UHS-II SD card support. To make the camera easier to operate on-the-go, the interface has a useful mode dial featuring 12 modes across still and video shooting and a dedicated switch for moving between photo and movie capture.
Video Capture
The sensor of the EOS R8 captures full width 4K 60p footage that is oversampled from 6K sensor data to improve sharpness, and 180fps Full HD recording for slow motion recordings that allow playback at 1/6th speed.
The camera supports Canon Log 3 at 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 H.265 internal recording, resulting in greater dynamic range and flexibility in post-production. Alternatively, HDR PQ and HDR Movie modes can be selected to suit HDR workflows, and also produces a clean HDMI output to compatible devices.
To combat focus breathing during movie recording, caused by the internal focus lens elements movng inside the lens barrel during focusing, the EOS R8 has a function that compensates for changes to the angle of view when adjusting the focus distance. The camera also gives extended recording times for up to two hours of normal video capture, useful when shooting at events.
Featuring Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, the EOS R8 is able to focus in as little as 0.03 seconds even at 40fps, with the silent electronic shutter. Built as an intelligent system, it can detect, track and precisely focus on a range of subjects including animals, vehicles and people, or more specifically, head, face and eye detection. For greater control, it is also possible to select which eye to prioritise.
To simplify detection across this broad range of subjects, users can choose the auto setting. The feature selects the subject based on the composition of the image, and can be extended to low light shooting scenarios as low as -6.5 EV. It responds automatically to dynamically changing scenes, and can track subjects over the entire frame. This kind of automated, high performance subject tracking leaves the user more time to focus on composition.
Connectivity
Users can share their work and make use of the Camera Connect app using the camera’s built in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), WPA2 and WPA3 personal authentications secure users’ network connections.
A fast wired connection for direct download and operation can be set up via the Canon Connect App. The EOS R8 is iOS MFI certified for iPhone, and Android users have the same facility via USB-C to USB-C cable. The EOS R8 can also be used as a webcam due to USB video device class (UVC) and USB audio device class (UAC) support.
Small, Light Zoom
The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lightweight RF series 2x zoom lens launched at the same time as the R8, with 24-50mm focal length. It features image stabilisation up to 4.5 stops, which increases to up to 7 stops when attached to an EOS R camera with In-Body Image Stabilizer, so that photographers can shoot video and stills in low light without using a tripod.
The STM focusing motor is fast and quiet, with extra control from a customisable lens control ring that switches between different modes.
