Rai Way integrates cloud storage services into its new data centres distributed across Italy by adopting Cubbit’s DS3 Composer software, enabling a fully Italian edge-to-cloud solution.
Rai Way S.p.A. is an integrated digital infrastructure operator and service provider for media content distribution. From headquarters in Rome and 21 regional offices, it serves as the sole operator of the broadcasting and transmission networks that carry the signals of RAI, Italy's public broadcaster.
As well as its telecommunications infrastructure, Rai Way has built and launched its first five data centres, with three control centres, located across Italy in Venice, Turin, Milan, Genoa and Florence. This new infrastructure now makes Rai Way a suitable partner for companies looking for integrated solutions for the management and transmission of data and signals, and to help develop their networks.
As part of this launch, Rai Way has formed a Business Alliance Partnership with Cubbit, a developer of geo-distributed cloud storage. Through this agreement, Rai Way integrates cloud storage services into its portfolio by adopting Cubbit’s DS3 Composer software, enabling a fully Italian edge-to-cloud solution. An initial capacity of 5 petabytes has been dedicated to delivering Cloud Object Storage services for Rai Way’s customers.
The service is now live and available to all users, who can opt for a free trial period if desired.
Cubbit supplies cloud storage solutions that are designed to achieve as much resilience, data sovereignty and availability as possible with the given resources. Cubbit’s approach fragments stored data into encrypted pieces, distributed across multiple network nodes. As a result, no file is ever exposed in full, and all remain accessible – even in the event of a cyberattack or outage.
Service providers and enterprises work with Cubbit’s software to very quickly deploy their own geo-distributed cloud storage networks, aligned to their infrastructure strategy and internal policies. They can keep full sovereignty over data, keep workflows simple and reduce costs.
All of DS3 Composer’s services – for backup, data lakes and AI applications, disaster recovery and active archiving – are S3 compatible, and sovereignty is maintained by storing data in a geo-distributed manner within a country’s perimeter, in control and compliance with security and privacy laws.
Rai Way’s decision to partner with Cubbit stems from its intention to improve the performance, security and cost-effectiveness of its services by adopting a more modern system than had been available to the industry so far. In the Cubbit-Rai Way solution, these qualities are further enhanced by the geographical distribution of Rai Way’s data centres and its proprietary network infrastructure.
“The partnership with Cubbit strengthens Rai Way’s strategy to provide Italian enterprises and public sector organisations with the solutions and infrastructure needed to accelerate their digital transformation,” Michele Gallo, Head of Operations Datacenter at Rai Way, commented. “The synergy between our geographically distributed data centres, the proprietary fibre network connecting them, and Cubbit’s technology ensures a secure, resilient solution for data storage and preservation.
Alessandro Cillario, co-CEO and co-founder of Cubbit, said, “Our Rai Way partnership confirms that our technology is becoming a standard for data storage. Cubbit identifies strategic partners in key industry verticals and equips them with tools to support business growth — while continuing to rely on the trusted relationships they already have with our partners such as HPE, Acronis, Accenture and Equinix. Following our collaboration with Leonardo in the defence sector, we have now enabled Rai Way to offer their services in the media and entertainment market.” www.cubbit.io
