Comoros Islands’ public broadcaster ORTC now distributes its channels faster using Synamedia's Quortex Link IP distribution services on a pay-as-you-go business model.

Synamedia ORTC Announcement

National public broadcaster for the Comoros Islands, located in the Indian Ocean, is the Office de Radio et Télévision des Comores (ORTC), which distributes its channels to French-language content providers. Traditionally, setting up connections with providers using satellite infrastructure has taken weeks and considerable CAPEX.

However, ORTC can now accomplish this job much faster by using Synamedia's Quortex Link IP distribution on a pay-as-you-go business model.

After a competitive evaluation among other distribution options, followed by a proof of concept, ORTC chose Quortex Link for its reliability, high availability and Synamedia's service level agreements. ORTC then moved from testing to live use in only two weeks. Distribution to the first content provider is now live, and four more ISPs will come on stream shortly.

Cloud-based Distribution Network

Using the Quortex Link portal, or dashboard, gives ORTC a simpler way to manage and monitor its distribution with a complete, continuous view of all feeds, so that the team no longer relies on a third party. Quortex Link is a self-service, SaaS platform that a provider can use to set up video distribution links on short notice for channels and for occasional-use events – in one step.

It delivers live content point-to-point globally using a secure cloud distribution network. ORTC only pays for the time a link is active (pay-as-you-go), resulting in substantial cost savings compared to satellite distribution. As well as no longer needing satellite infrastructure, broadcasters can distribute content securely using the SRT protocol, and gain access to video streams using an IP address.

With this managed cloud IP backbone, users can access dozens of points of presence, and connect to the Quortex cloud platform from anywhere. Video is delivered close to takers, keeping latency as low as possible and improving quality of service. Quortex Link includes a built-in scheduler that makes sure content reaches the right taker at the correct time, and the Synamedia API for automation – launching and reconfiguring channels, collecting analytics and scheduling events such as shutdowns.

Reliability Plus Versatility

Hablani Assoumani, General Director of Office de Radio et Télévision des Comores, commented, "It was important that we weren't locked into a long contract. Quortex Link gives us that flexibility while also keeping the high levels of reliability we require.

“As well as Quortex, working with a video streaming platform provider like Synamedia gives us confidence that we can meet clients’ needs in the future. We will be looking for features including blackout management and customised transcoding to meet the different resolution and bit rate requirements of affiliates that we will be working with."

Elke Hungenaert, Vice President of Product Management, Video Network at Synamedia, "This win demonstrates Quortex Link's versatility in meeting the distribution needs of so many different types of customers, whatever their size. ORTC's impressive time to market highlights the benefits that Quortex Link customers achieve with its self-service model and ease of use." www.synamedia.com
