France Télévisions is ready to cover the pre- and post-competition activities of the surfing events during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with UHD content.

The surfing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place over four days within a 10-day window from 27 July to 5 August from Teahupo’o, Tahiti as part of an initiative to expand the Games across French territories. To increase the potential for engaging, behind-the-scenes coverage and ease camera movement for operators, the France Télévisions team will use 5G broadcast transmission systems, and plans to include live content such as interviews with the athletes in the Olympic Village and live shots from a camera onboard a boat.

In Teahupo’o, France Télévisions’ field production team will deploy Haivision Pro460 mobile video transmitters, chosen for ultra-low latency, to capture and transmit live contribution streams of pre- and post-event content. The transmitter feeds will be sent over the Obvios private 5G Dome network to Haivision StreamHub receivers located at the post-production centre at Teahupo’o beach.

Private 5G Dome Network

Obvios developed the private 5G software for their 5G Dome network to supply high-bandwidth, mobile connectivity for multimedia communications, voice and data services, compliant with the 3GPP standards. These standards are the foundation of the development of 5G and mobile broadband, ensuring interoperability and roaming between mobile networks around the world. 3GPP have also led to the development of the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) core networks and radio access networks.

As a private, software-based 5G network, in contrast to public 5G networks, Obvios’ 5G Dome serves as a closed, secure, controlled environment with a very resilient software architecture. It is also a sovereign private 5G system, which means that users have complete control. Data and communications are secure and managed under their authority, with no external influence. Sovereign also means that all software components are continuously checked and validated against new and known cyber-security threats.

Haivision ip gateway

IP Gateway

Fully produced content will be transported to France Télévisions’ broadcast production centre in Paris for broadcast across its networks using Haivision StreamHub’s IP gateway capabilities.

The Haivision Pro handles mobile video transmission requirements for live video contribution of sports, events and news over cellular networks, including private 5G networks like the Obvios Dome, supporting field-based camera operators and live broadcast producers who need to share live video contribution and return feeds over mobile and IP networks.

Compatible with H.264 and HEVC at resolutions up to 4K UHD, StreamHub is built for receiving, decoding and distributing live video for remote production. The gateway can receive up to 16 concurrent SST streams from Haivision mobile video transmitters and encoders, as well as IP sources and supports the SRT, RTMP, RTSP/RTP, TS/IP, HLS and NDI protocols for incoming and outgoing streams.

StreamHub also manages video returns, which remote operators can use to set up studio feeds, confidence monitoring and teleprompters, and works as a broadcast-grade video and audio transcoder engine. By performing real-time codec and format conversion, it allows users to adapt live video streams to meet the requirements of most destinations.

Connecting Athletes with Fans

France Télévisions’ resulting set-up is now capable of low latency, high-bandwidth connectivity for multimedia communications, voice and data services that are highly secure, mobile and reliable. “With our combined private 5G cellular network and cellular contribution system, we will be able to deliver high quality UHD coverage of the athletes to viewers before and after the surfing competition during the Olympic Games,” Thierry Jacob, Director of Overseas Resources and Development, France Télévisions said.

“These new systems in Tahiti will totally modernise the way France Télévisions Overseas production teams work and will bring viewers closer to the competitions and the athletes than has been possible before.”

Nicolas Dallery, Obvios Vice-President Marketing & Sales, noted, “Our private 5G network is robust and maintains its signal while on the move, overcoming the challenges of coverage and saturation of public networks. Due to Haivision’s mobile video transmitter devices, the Obvios 5G Dome network also enables France Télévisions to produce live broadcasts with excellent video quality.”

As an official broadcaster of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, France Télévisions will be broadcasting coverage from 26 July to 11 August with programming on France 2, France 3, Les 1ère, France 4 and, for the first time, a digital channel completely dedicated to the event available on France.tv.    www.haivision.com
