Perifery OpenEBS PRO supports enterprise data management by integrating stateful persistence into the Kubernetes platform for manage and scale containerised applications.
Perifery OpenEBS PRO is a new approach to storing data for enterprises using Kubernetes. Perifery OpenEBS PRO supports enterprise-grade data management by integrating stateful persistence capabilities into the Kubernetes platform, enabling enterprises to handle critical stateful workloads with container-native storage.
Developers use containers to package and isolate applications together with their runtime environment – that is, all of the files they need to run. The apps can then be moved from development to testing to production and so on – without affecting the application’s functionality. Containers also make it easier to move the applications between public, private and hybrid cloud environments and data centres, while maintaining behaviour and functionality and supporting IT security.
Kubernetes Data States
Kubernetes is the orchestration software that automates manual processes used to deploy, manage and scale containerised applications. Kubernetes works in clusters of compute nodes (physical or virtual) that run Linux containers, together with a control plane. The control plane maintains the desired state of the cluster, such as which applications are running, while the compute nodes actually run the applications.
Abhi Dey, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer at Perifery said that Kubernetes is a good choice for deploying stateless applications such as microservices and machine learning. “However, it is not designed to handle persistent datastores required by traditional stateful workloads,” he said.
A stateful application saves client data (or the state) from the activities of one session for use in the next. It sends a request to the server, expects a response, tracks the information and stores it. For a stateless app, each request sent to the server stands alone. It does not need earlier requests to execute, and no information about the current state is carried to the next transaction.
“Perifery OpenEBS PRO addresses this critical gap by integrating stateful persistence capabilities into Kubernetes and results in a holistic system with enterprise-level flash performance, resiliency, data security and global support,” Abhi Dey said
Open Source Foundation
Perifery OpenEBS PRO is based on OpenEBS, a widely deployed stateful persistent open-source datastore platform in the Kubernetes market, from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. It has more than 500,000 users. Perifery OpenEBS PRO makes available a line-up of stateful persistence capabilities for Kubernetes. These tools are designed to help enterprises manage stateful workloads, and scale and set up storage sharing across Kubernetes systems.
Users can deploy OpenEBS PRO on any node – either hardware, virtual or cloud-hosted – in their Kubernetes cluster, where it is then used to simplify disk resources into manageable logical volumes, block devices, storage pools and file systems. Use case examples are provisioning data volumes for a specific application or data pipeline, executing data protection, archiving and long-term retention workflows.
OpenEBS PRO can also be used for cloning data, replicating volumes, snapshots, thin provisioning or virtual datapools. The software is platform-neutral and supports all NVMe-powered storage flash hardware. Overall, the goal is to use core Kubernetes principles to speed up the deployment of production-ready applications, and enhance agility.
Perifery will continue to invest in the development of OpenEBS and support its open-source users via the CNCF OpenEBS project. Meanwhile the company will address the critical needs of the enterprise market with more features and data management services on Perifery OpenEBS PRO. www.perifery.com
