Sony will launch a new handheld digital wireless microphone, the DWM-30, in early 2025, adding it to their existing DWX Digital Wireless Microphone series as a microphone transmitter.
The DWM-30 succeeds the DWM-02N that is currently in use in professional audio environments such as broadcasting stations, live performances and news gathering. For the new model, the electrical circuits and mechanical structure have been reviewed to improve sound quality, and its design incorporates electromagnetic field simulation, aiming for more stable operation to enhance transmission performance of the wireless system. The DWM-30 also has a lighter-weight build, easier grip and longer battery life of about 6 hours continuous operation, compared to the DWM-02N.
To increase flexibility, instead of a dedicated microphone capsule, the DWM-30 is supplied with an interchangeable head mechanism supporting Sony and other third party capsules. Sony distributes three microphone heads.
The DWM-30 microphone supports four codec modes for different applications. CODEC MODE 2 prioritises short latency times, achieving a low latency level of 1.2msec while maintaining transmission stability and high audio quality. MODE 1 is compatible with first generation DWX-series devices and MODE 3 adds signal processing that suppresses noise caused by unexpected pulse interference.
CODEC MODE 4, which balances high-quality transmission and low latency, is now supported as well, resulting in recorded and transmitted sound that is more faithful to the original.
Depending on the local region, the mic supports a wide band of up to 148MHz in the TV white space band / 375kHz channel plan, allowing up to 16 channels per TV band. It transmits and receives 24-bit digital audio within a specific frequency bandwidth, meeting Wireless Communication Regulations for each country. Using the original Sony codec design, the DWX system delivers a wide dynamic range of more than 106 dB, wide frequency response of 20 Hz to 22 kHz, and robust transient response.
When the regular settings do not reach a sufficient level of sensitivity when capturing sounds, the HIGH GAIN MODE allows 3-stage amplification of +6/+12/+18dB. This mode makes it possible to amplify the sound even when the microphone is held away from the mouth during recording, in effect increasing sensitivity. pro.sony
