Grass Valley EDIUS 9.4 Updates HDR, ProRes and Captioning for Editors

Grass Valley’s new version of EDIUS nonlinear editing software addresses issues associated with consumer demand for more content on a greater number of devices, putting broadcasters under pressure to reach wider audiences on tighter budgets. Updates made to EDIUS version 9.4, which include faster functionality and new creative tools, help editors design efficient, flexible workflows that are scalable and adaptable to future expectations.  

EDIUS 9.4 now supports ProRes export from the timeline combined with support for ProRes RAW decoding. ProRes export also supports the codec’s smart rendering function, resulting in quicker turnaround for ProRes native editing workflows. Smart rendering analyses video for previously rendered sections and renders only the new or revised sections.

When the video is previewed for the first time, the project is ‘rendered’ by creating a temporary preview file on the hard drive combining the video, image and audio clips with any special effects. The smart render function detects any changes in the project and if there are no changes, instantly plays back the preview file. If there are changes – such as titles, video filters or transition effects – it renders out only the edited portions.

Due to new closed caption handling, scc and mcc files can now be imported to the timeline separately, applied to the project and, together with the CEA-708/608 caption data, can either be exported as scc/mcc files or burned in to the video as open captions.  

The Multicam workflow is now updated as well so that users can select files shot at varying angles and switch quickly to the multi-camera mode for editing.

New settings in the Primary Colour Correction filter – which is a 3-way colour corrector that works as a pre-processing lab allowing users to identify the source camera and choose the destination colour space – now makes it simpler to convert between HDR and SDR formats, with automatic gain and tone mapping applied to files to improve image quality.

This adds to Edius’ ability to export in HDR for broadcasting and web distribution, mix SDR and HDR material on the same project, and output results in either colour space. It is also a convenient supplement to the existing ability to work directly in 4K UHD.
