Videon’s edge computing for video makes live video processing and distribution faster and more efficient at lower cost, giving developers options to process video at point of capture.
Videon has designed a developer toolkit, LiveEdge Compute, that a number of video systems providers – including Net Insight, EZDRM, Synamedia, Zixi, V-Nova, Red5 Pro, Techex, THEO Technologies and Livepeer – are now using to develop edge applications that simplify on-premise-to-cloud workflows for media companies, cloud providers and integrators. The apps are able to take advantage of Videon’s built-in ultra-low latency video processing software to deliver video workflow monitoring and management, improved picture quality with reduced bandwidth, content encryption and instant channel switching.
Videon specialises in edge computing for video, aiming to make live video processing and distribution faster and more efficient at lower cost. It gives users options to process video at the point of capture by combining built-in functions running on its local video edge computing platform LiveEdge with further features from the cloud. Videon’s tools can be used to develop video applications handling simple, low latency encoding and streaming as well as advanced AI-powered use cases.
On-Premise-to-Cloud Workflows
Moving live video from source to viewers is complex and has traditionally required investment in broadcast equipment or third-party services, both of which may be expensive. Videon’s platform approach is simpler, enhancing the type of processors normally found in new smartphones to deliver broadcast-quality video. Integration of live video productions with the network to start streaming live at ultra-low latency is done with Videon’s own EdgeCaster device.
Videon places edge computing power at the point where video is created, so that various video processing tasks can be completed before content goes into cloud storage. According to Videon, edge computing for live video supports more automated, intelligent, flexible and controlled workflows. Users can add multiple camera angles, for instance, and remote feeds to handle secondary and tertiary content that compliments the primary broadcast feed and engages viewers more effectively. By giving companies the ability to manage, augment and extend live video workflows, new business models can be created and applied rapidly.
Each edge application supports one of four tenets of Videon's edge computing platform. These are Extend, enabling custom workflows that move traditional cloud functions to the video origin; Manage, allowing control and automation of devices and fleets of devices through the cloud; Augment, creating intelligent video by adding critical metadata; and Connect, improving connection quality and reliability.
LiveEdge Compute Edge Apps
Video developers like those mentioned above are continuously building edge apps using the LiveEdge Compute development kit. LiveEdge Compute is Docker-based, making it possible to deploy apps that bring the facilities and flexibility of the cloud to the live video origin.
“We integrated our forensic watermarking quite easily within Videon’s toolkit," said Alain Durand, Senior Director of Business Development at Synamedia. “Our bitstream watermarking system is particularly well adapted to such a constrained environment, and Videon’s architecture allows us to protect customers’ content as soon as it is created.”
The growing collection of edge apps includes Net Insight’s Nimbra Edge, enabling cost-efficient and flexible contribution and primary distribution at the edge. “Integrating Videon’s LiveEdge with the open Nimbra ecosystem simplifies workflows and further optimises media operations,” said Kenth Andersson, Head of strategic alliances at Net Insight. “This move supports the media and entertainment industry to produce more live video content while promoting CAPEX and OPEX efficiency.”
Zixi has also been a pioneer behind the next generation of live video infrastructure and is another adopter and supporter of Videon's new framework. SVP Alliances and Marketing John Wastcoat said, “Zixi running on Videon extends our reliable contribution technologies and platform capabilities to the edge where video is created, enabling edge-to-cloud control of video delivery.”
Videon will show select edge applications and preview LiveEdge Cloud at NAB 2022 in April. www.videonlabs.com
