Grass Valley showed developments in SDI/IP infrastructure processing at IBC 2023 that help producers deliver media to broadcasters from anywhere, in the format required, whenever it is needed. The company’s signal processing, conversion and network management systems focus on efficiency, and also support workflow migration to the integrated SDI/IP infrastructure of Grass Valley’s Agile Media Processing Platform (AMPP).

Media organisations can use the products to work with different combinations of on-premises, cloud-based or hybrid approaches, and later the same products can be adapted to accommodate changes in the business. The IBC updates include GV Orbit orchestration and Kaleido multiviewers.

Grass Valley says the key value of the AMPP ecosystem is its flexibility. Its architecture allows all connected users to work collaboratively, with real-time visibility of changes made by any individual so that users are never out of sync. Existing GV Stratus and sQ users can connect to AMPP as an overarching environment through the asset management system Framelight X, and then adopt the platform’s cloud services at their own pace. In the meantime, they can structure and automate media management workflows in Framelight X to keep dispersed talent and users connected to the process.

Framelight X Connects AMPP to Newsrooms

Framelight X serves as the hub of AMPP’s suite of integrated tools. Most recently, an AMPP-native MOS Clip List Player has been added to AMPP players and connected to Framelight X, to be driven by an NRCS rundown, for newsroom and live event production playout. Multiple rundowns can be supported with features such as preview of intro or outro, end clip behaviour and post roll support.

Another enhancement to Framelight X is the repurposing of Grass Valley’s Mync downloadable media player as an RMI (remote method invocation) tool for ingesting media. RMI tools allow objects on one computer or Virtual Machine to interact with objects running on a different machine in a distributed network.

Mync supports a huge number of file types and formats, functions as a universal media player, and automatically organises content to ease management and sharing. Users can ingest virtually any digital video format, create in and out marks and upload them to Framelight X where the content can be craft edited in the Framelight X Editor, EDIUS X or Adobe Premiere.

Editing is made possible in the Framelight X Editor because it now includes HTML5 graphics support. Editors can not only create graphics, but also set template variables so that graphics can be modified directly on the timeline. The Framelight X Inspector tool will also have the ability to view closed captions and, following a future release, edit the captions within the Framelight X Editor.

GV Orbit Media Orchestration Adds Tally Integration

Within the integrated SDI/IP infrastructure of AMPP is the configuration, control and monitoring system, GV Orbit, which now has a tally management option. In effect, this update means the user can include tally management capabilities on the same GV Orbit server that controls all signal paths, and that handles configuration and monitoring in a single integrated view. Adding Tally Management to an existing server means no further hardware or installation is required.

“We’ve partnered with TSL to add GVO-Tally as an option within GV Orbit,” said Steve Bilow, Senior Product Manager, Infrastructure Software Platforms for Grass Valley. “You don’t need extra power, rack space, cabling or installation labour to set up a complete tally system that facilitates communication between Grass Valley Production Switchers, camera tally lamps, and the labels and properties on UMDs and multiviewer tiles.”

GV Orbit can discover all connected Grass Valley and NMOS-compliant network devices and will display them automatically in the various available views. Rather than manually connecting each device within a network topology, users drag the sources they need to the main topology display and provision them automatically. GV Orbit connects the links between IP switches, gateways and IP devices automatically, but still permits manual configuration if it is needed.

Multiviewing

GV Kaleido visualisation

The Kaleido multiviewer line up has a new Kaleido-IP (KIP) model, the KIP-X240 1RU platform, supporting up to 400G of IP bandwidth. The KIP-X240 can monitor, probe and display up to 100 uncompressed inputs with full 2022-7 redundancy.

“Kaleido-IP always delivered high-performance compressed workflows. The KIP-X240 now performs in software at a level close to the uncompressed performance of proprietary hardware, giving users the option to support uncompressed or compressed applications on one platform,” said Lee Buchanan, VP Cameras and Networking for Grass Valley. “The KIP-X240 now carries out signal probing and alarming, simple layout creation, with Kaleido’s support for any source, anywhere that results in nearly limitless replication and scaling of input sources.” www.grassvalley.com
