OpenAPV is an open source video codec supporting professional-grade video capture and post-production for mobile devices and cloud-based tools, first introduced by Samsung in 2023.
The Academy Software Foundation, open source software developer for the motion picture industry, has taken on the OpenAPV video codec as a new sandbox project. Its developer Samsung Electronics has also become a new Premier Member.
The improvement in smartphone camera performance has led to a group of content creators who want to access professional-grade video recording and post-production editing capabilities on their mobile devices and cloud-based tools. Codecs traditionally used in these environments are not suitable for professional use, as they have been designed for lossy compression of video for mass distribution.
To meet this growing demand, Samsung Electronics introduced the APV codec in 2023, which generates perceptually lossless video quality and consumes 20% less storage compared to existing formats. Hosted at the Academy Software Foundation and led by Samsung Electronics, OpenAPV will make available a royalty-free, open source reference implementation of the APV codec, that can be used in professional-grade video recording and post-production workflows without quality degradation.
"We believe in the power of collaboration, and we've seen the Academy Software Foundation's great achievements in making open source software more accessible for the entire content creation industry," said Kwang Pyo Choi, Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics. "We are excited to contribute to the Foundation and look forward to working with the other members to better support the professional content creators who use its products."
Samsung has shown deep commitment to open source, advancing technological innovation through proactive and open collaboration with developers all over the world. The company has already released or contributed to 110 various open source projects, with others underway.
"Samsung's longstanding commitment to open source has been a model for companies in many industries, spanning both hardware and software development," shared David Morin, Executive Director of the Academy Software Foundation. "We are pleased that Samsung Electronics has joined the Foundation and is contributing the APV source code to create OpenAPV. We hope that many developers will join and participate in its development." www.aswf.io
